Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 ounces fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 1 cup water
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves (optional)

Instructions

  • Combine Ingredients: In a medium saucepan, combine the cranberries, water, sugar (or honey/maple syrup), orange juice, orange zest, cinnamon, and cloves (if using). Give everything a good stir to make sure the sugar is evenly distributed.
  • Bring to a Boil: Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a boil. You’ll start to see the cranberries burst and release their juices.
  • Simmer: Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 10-15 minutes, or until the cranberries have softened and the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. I learned after testing this a few times that the sauce will thicken more as it cools, so don’t worry if it seems a little thin at first.
  • Cool and Serve: Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the cranberry sauce cool completely. As it cools, it will thicken up beautifully. Transfer to a serving dish and refrigerate until ready to serve.
